What is a Handfasting or “Tie the Knot” Ceremony?
A handfasting ceremony, often known as “Tying the Knot,” is a revered and inclusive element of unity ceremonies. Originating from ancient traditions, it involves the symbolic binding of the couple’s hands together with materials like ribbons, cords, lace, leather, or braids, arranged to form the infinity symbol. This act represents eternal union and the joining of two (or more) hearts as one.
Who Participates in the Ceremony?
The ceremony actively involves family members and close friends, who participate by wrapping the ribbons around the couple’s hands and extending their blessings. This inclusive aspect allows the ceremony to be personal, intimate, and communal. Clients may customise the number and types of cords used, depending on the desired number of participants in this poignant ritual. You may opt for a simpler setting with just the couple.

For every handfasting ceremony I conduct, I design a custom-made certificate which can be signed by participants and witnesses alike. I use handfasting to foster unity among family members, especially when children are from different relationships. Involving children not only includes them but also actively engages them during the ceremony. The custom certificates give the children a treasured keepsake of the day, while the couple keeps the cords, which many decide to have framed as a beautiful, lasting memento.
